Hey all,I've been looking to buy a used TT and I've gotten in contact with someone on Craigslist selling both a Dual 721 (for $60) and a Pioneer PL-25 ($90). From the research I've done both of these seem to be pretty solid tables and both look to be in good condition. I'm probably going to drive over next weekend, audition them both, and hopefully take one home.Just wanted to know what thinks of these tables, particularly which one of the two they'd pick at those price points, all other things (condition etc.) being equal.
I've read that Dual tables can sound really great but can also be really finicky with regard to maintenance, but I've read a lot of conflicting info about whether this only really applies to the idler-drive 12XX model Duals (the 721 is direct-drive). That particular Pioneer model is an idler-drive and seems to be pretty rare but people who do own it seem to like it; sounds good and is reliable. So in my position, which one would you go with? Opinions on SQ are welcome but reliability is more of a concern here since I'll get to audition both of the tables anyway. I should probably also mention that this is my first turntable purchase.Thanks!.
Those are indeed both solid turntables. In terms of sound quality, the Dual has a better tonearm. The clunky arms without anti-skate on those old Pioneers are a bit primitive, but they can also sound good with the right cartridge. The drive system on the Dual is quieter and more accurate, but idler drives do have a particular sound that some people (myself included) enjoy. I think you're making the right choice in auditioning both and seeing which one you like better.Reliability is also a tricky question, because they are both fairly complicated machines in different ways.
The direct drive Duals like the 721 are simple mechanically, but very complicated electronically. These Duals generally don't need routine maintenance. Most of the ones I've seen have been very reliable and haven't had any issues, but if something does fail you're probably going to need to troubleshoot and replace electrical components. The Pioneer, on the other hand, is electrically simple, but mechanically complex.
Idler drives use a clockwork-like mechanism with many bearings, wheels and linkages that all need to be properly lubricated. Old, dry lube will cause rumble, speed instability and other issues. At some point you will likely need to take the table apart to clean and relube all of the moving parts.
Personally, I think it's much easier to learn how to do this maintenance yourself than it is to learn the skills needed to troubleshoot a direct drive.
